This project is an oldie but goodie and I can speak to it's longevity since I completed it more than a year ago and it has been well loved!
This project starts with an IKEA Kitchen (Duktig). I got ours from Facebook Marketplace and I see them frequently pop up. These things are sturdy, they will last and last and then be passed on!
There are also great kitchens on Target and Amazon. These are such cute options from amazon!
Phase 1 -- DIY Kitchen Update - Cleaning and painting
Depending on if you get this used or not your prep will be different. If you got it used, take time to clean every nook and cranny! I just used dish soap and hot water.
I removed the top from the kitchen and the doors to paint by hand. If you are using spray paint you may have an easier time taking it fully apart or paint before assembly. I used Sherwin Williams Emerald Trim Paint, it was recommended by the employee as the strongest paint against chips and scuffs and I haven't seen a chip or scrape in over a year. Highly recommend!

Phase 2 -- DIY Kitchen Update - Add backsplash and Accessories
I like the look of a backsplash and it was suuuuper easy to add. We just went to our target and got a poster board, or presentation board and used a staple gun to add it to the back. Then we put peel and stick backsplash stickers, it was simple and added a really big impact.

Phase 3 - DIY Kitchen Update - Fridge & Freezer Storage
We decided to add more storage by creating a "fridge." It was a simple DIY with just an Ikea Kallax cabinet ($34.99). Here is an Amazon option as well (link). We had an extra board that we sanded and painted the same color as the kitchen and then attached with soft close hinges. (Here is a pack of 2). We ended up cutting the board to make the look of a Freezer / Fridge, but that was personal preference! Add some handles and it's done!

Phase 4 - DIY Kitchen Update - Working Water Faucet
My favorite part of this DIY kitchen is the working faucet. This is definitely an older kid accessory and we actually removed it for the first year because my daughter wasn't quite ready. The faucet is 5$ and has worked great so far. All I did was remove the fake faucet and put the tubing down the hole. It fits perfectly in the Ikea kitchen. It isn't screwed in, but placed on top, this way we can remove and charge it. I usually charge every 2-3 months. Below the faucet are two containers, one for clean water and one for dirty. I had to drill some holes in the bottom of the sink, just line those holes up with your dirty water container and you are done. It was super easy!
I also put a waterproof bath mat under, in case there are little spills. I cut a small Ikea rug in half but here is one from Amazon.
